Blunts are joints rolled in cigar papers, which are made of tobacco and thus contain nicotine. Cigar papers are available in packs at smoke shops, but many users simply repurpose the paper of a commercially produced, purchased-at-a-convenience-store cigar. (Optimos are popular.)

MAKES 1 BLUNT

1 to 2 grams of cannabis (a blunt uses roughly double the weed of a joint)

Cigar papers or a store-bought cigar

Manual handheld grinder

Knife or razor blade

Saliva

Lighter

1. To prep the weed, remove any seeds and stems, then give the cannabis a coarse grind.

2. Prep the paper. If using readymade cigar rolling papers, crease the paper lengthwise down the middle with the gummy-side up. If repurposing a store-bought cigar, take your blade and cut the cigar lengthwise down its side. Carefully pry the cigar open and scoop out the insides. (Be careful—dried tobacco leaves are unsurprisingly fragile.)

3. Spread your weed evenly down the length of your cigar papers and follow steps 4 to 7 in How to Roll a Joint by Hand to finish your blunt.

4. With a repurposed cigar, you don’t have the luxury of a gummy adhesive strip to make your blunt stay shut. Instead, you’ll just have to give your repurposed-cigar blunt a good spitty lick at the sealing point, then “bake” it closed by running a lighter’s flame up and down the length of the blunt.
